The conversation around psychedelics and mental health has mostly focused on what happens during the experience. Patients in clinical trials describe profound shifts in perspective, emotional breakthroughs, a sense of connection or meaning. Researchers measure brain activity, track mood in real time, and document what people report feeling during the hours the drug is active. The therapeutic window is assumed to be the trip itself.

A new study from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland challenges that assumption in a specific and measurable way. The researchers gave 45 healthy adults a full clinical dose of LSD and largely ignored what happened during the experience. They came back a week later.

At the seven-day mark, participants completed validated psychological assessments measuring two things: perceived stress and cognitive flexibility. The stress scale asked how often in the past week they had felt overwhelmed, unable to control important things, or confident about their ability to handle problems. The cognitive flexibility measure focused specifically on a person’s ability to generate alternative solutions when their first approach to a problem fails.

Both had changed. Participants who had taken LSD a week earlier reported significantly lower stress than during their placebo session. They also scored higher on the flexibility measure, suggesting their thinking had become more adaptive in the days following the experience.

The study was published in Neuropsychopharmacology, one of the most selective journals in psychopharmacology research, and used a randomized double-blind crossover design in which every participant completed both the LSD session and the placebo session at least four weeks apart. That means each person served as their own control, making the comparison unusually clean.

What changed, and what did not

The one-week results are the headline finding, but the study tracked participants across multiple time points, and the pattern of what changed when tells a more specific story.

On the day of dosing, the drug behaved as expected. Brain recordings taken during the session showed that LSD reduced the size of two specific brainwave components linked to auditory processing and attention. Motor responses to magnetic brain stimulation became faster and larger than in the placebo condition, suggesting heightened excitability in the motor system while the drug was active.

The following day, participants came in for motor learning tests. They practiced a nine-digit typing sequence with their non-dominant hand across ten rounds, then rested, then were tested again. The LSD group improved their typing speed during the rest periods by roughly 33 percent more than the placebo group. This offline consolidation effect, improvement that accumulates during rest rather than active practice, was specific and objective. It suggests the brain was still processing and strengthening newly learned movements the morning after dosing, even without any drug remaining in the system.

Then came the seven-day results. Lower stress. More flexible thinking. A week after a single dose.

“We saw that a single, moderately strong dose of LSD improved motor learning the next day, and one week after LSD, perceived stress was reduced and aspects of cognitive flexibility were increased,” said lead researcher Abigail Calder, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Fribourg.

Why the week-later finding matters more than the trip itself

The stress and flexibility results shift the frame around how psychedelics might work therapeutically. The dominant model in the field has been that the acute experience, the altered perception, the emotional intensity, the shift in self-narrative, is what produces lasting change. On that model, the trip is the treatment.

What this study found is that measurable psychological changes were still present seven days after the experience in people who were healthy to begin with, had no mental health conditions, and were not in a therapeutic context with a guide or integration support. They took a drug, went home, and a week later their brains were handling stress differently and generating solutions more flexibly.

This is relevant because cognitive flexibility is not a soft psychological variable. It is a core executive function that predicts performance under uncertainty, resilience to setbacks, and the ability to shift strategies when a situation changes. Lower scores on flexibility measures are associated with depression, anxiety, and rigid thinking patterns. Higher scores are associated with better adaptation to stress and more effective problem solving.

The fact that a single dose moved this measure in healthy adults a week later raises questions about what the same dose might do in people whose flexibility is already compromised by depression or chronic stress.

What the researchers cannot yet explain

The study has real limitations that the researchers are candid about. The stress and flexibility findings came from self-report questionnaires, which means they are vulnerable to expectation effects. Participants in a crossover trial often know when they received the active drug rather than the placebo, particularly with a full 100-microgram dose of LSD, and positive expectations about psychedelics could have influenced how they described their mental state a week later.

The team attempted to test for neuroplasticity directly, using rapid auditory tones and paired magnetic brain stimulation, but neither technique produced the expected baseline responses even in the placebo group, making it impossible to confirm whether any of the observed changes were driven by genuine structural brain change or by something else entirely.

The sample size, 43 participants analyzed from 45 enrolled, is small. All were healthy adults with no psychiatric conditions. Whether the same week-later effects appear in people with clinical anxiety or depression, the populations most relevant to therapeutic applications, remains entirely untested.

“We aren’t sure how reliable the effect on motor learning is, how long it lasts, or under what exact circumstances it arises,” Calder said. “Hold off on taking LSD before trying to study or start skiing lessons.”

She added that the most important next step is straightforward. “First and foremost, it’s important to replicate these findings in other samples to make sure they’re reliable.”

Where this sits in the larger picture

The finding fits into a growing body of evidence that psychedelics produce changes in brain function that outlast the acute experience by days or weeks. Earlier research using psilocybin found that a single dose could reduce depression scores for months. Studies on MDMA found lasting changes in how the brain processes fear. What has been missing from most of this research is a clear account of the mechanism, what exactly the brain is doing differently in the days and weeks after a dose, and why.

This study does not solve that problem. But it adds a specific, measurable, week-later signal in healthy people that is now documented in a controlled trial. Lower stress. More flexible thinking. A brain that learned a physical skill faster the morning after.

The acute experience may not be the whole story.
